'Delightful' bird paintings by Susan Lester to be celebrated in the book that nearly never was

Image
When media magnate Edmund Rouse was embroiled in a political scandal and jailed for attempted bribery in 1989, it sent his businesses into turmoil. One lesser-known victim of Rouse's demise was budding artist Susan Lester, who was commissioned by the businessman to paint 200 detailed Tasmanian birds to be published as a special two-volume book to mark 150 years of The Examiner Newspaper. It was a huge task, one that would take four years of Lester's life, and would launch her career from an emerging self-taught hobby painter to a professional artist. Premier Peter Gutwein conspicuously absent from PM's Tasmanian tour

There was one noticeable absentee when Prime Minister Scott Morrison toured a northern winery on Monday morning, Tasmanian Premier Peter Gutwein. While the Prime Minister was flanked by federal Bass MP Bridget Archer, Lyons candidate Susie Bower and Senators Claire Chandler and Wendy Askew, Mr Gutwein held a competing press conference 50 minutes down the road at Bell Bay. Normally, state premiers and prime ministers can't be separated during a Tasmanian visit, particularly on the eve of a federal election campaign. New plan could save swift parrot from 'imminent danger of extinction', researchers say

Image
A new plan to save the swift parrot from going extinct within a decade could also ensure Tasmania's state-owned forestry organisation is financially viable, researchers say. Modelling indicates the population is rapidly declining towards extinction and estimates suggest as few as 750 swift parrots are left in the wild, a reduction from about 2,000 a decade ago. In a new report for The Wilderness Society, the Tree Projects and BirdLife Australia, ecologists Jennifer Sanger and Nick Fitzgerald say the main threat to the parrot is the loss of breeding and foraging habitat — in particular, blue and black gum forests. Trial for e-scooters in Hobart should be paused amid injuries and 'deep concerns', two councillors say

Image
Two Hobart City councillors are calling for a trial of e-scooters to be put on ice in Hobart for a month so an "urgent report" can be done on the safety risks they pose.  Aldermen Jeff Briscoe and Marti Zucco said disability advocates and senior citizens had "expressed deep concerns" about the use of scooters on footpaths. They said there were many instances of them being "used inappropriately … including doubling up, vandalism, kids under 16 using them, no helmets and inappropriate speeds". "I think we rushed too quickly and didn't do enough background and didn't get police on side," Alderman Briscoe said.  Read More: https://www.abc.net.au/news/2022-01-27/hobart-e-scooter-trial-councillors-ask-for-pause/100783874
