Livestock has been stopped from boarding the Spirit of Tasmania, with horses set to race on Melbourne Cup day now unable to travel, one transport operator says. The ABC understands a number of transport companies have been contacted this afternoon and told their forward bookings have been cancelled, following yesterday's court decision at which ferry operator TT-Line was found guilty of breaching animal welfare laws after 16 polo ponies died during a voyage in 2018. Russia, Ukraine among countries meeting in Tasmania over future of Antarctic waters

Image
Delegations from Russia and Ukraine are among those meeting in Tasmania this week to decide the future of Antarctica's pristine waters. Conservationists say new marine protected areas and rules to prevent overfishing are desperately needed, but Russia could use its veto-like powers to once again block progress on establishing them. Achieving the required consensus for action among this diverse group of 27, which also includes China, the United States and the European Union, has always been an immense challenge. Artificial intelligence to help preparation for Tasmania's fire season

Image
Firefighters are using technology which reports back every 15 minutes to give them eyes on potential bushfire areas 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Monitoring Tasmania's remote and challenging terrain is a luxury firefighters have never had, but a new artificial-intelligence camera trial may be able to help. Pensioner angry over compensation paid by Tasmanian Public Trustee

Image
A Tasmanian pensioner who took on the public trustee after it allegedly cancelled his funeral plan and sold his belongings without his consent, says a $10,000 compensation payment amounts to "a slap on the wrist". Documents seen by the ABC show Michael Burles has been paid $10,000 by the Tasmanian Public Trustee, plus $5,000 in legal fees. The compensation is almost double the $5,454 he paid in funeral insurance premiums — but Mr Burles said he hadn't been properly compensated for what he was put through, and still intends to launch legal action over the sale and disposal of his furniture and possessions.  Read More: https://www.abc.net.au/news/2022-10-21/tas-public-trustee-compensation-payment-michael-burles/101550252

Proposed building-dispute reform welcomed, but too late for some Tasmanian consumers

Image
Tasmanians who have defects with their new home builds could soon have access to a tribunal to hear their disputes with builders, but only if the issue occurred after mid-2021. This has caused concern that many will be unable to access justice, including those who have repeatedly raised issues in recent years. The government's residential building law reforms are due to be debated in parliament next week, proposed after growing concern that the state had no mechanism — other than potentially expensive legal action — for Tasmanians to resolve disputes with builders.
