Spirit of Tasmania pony death legal saga has no end in sight as matter adjourned until September

Image
It has been more than four-and-a-half years since 16 polo ponies died during a voyage on a Spirit of Tasmania ferry, but the drawn-out legal saga stemming from the deaths has no end in sight. The horses were found dead inside a trailer after a Bass Strait crossing between Devonport and Melbourne in January 2018. Two more horses survived. Ferry operator TT-Line is fighting allegations of 29 breaches of the animal welfare act, including that it failed to ensure the horses were individually stalled and to ensure there was adequate ventilation. Teenager Mitchell Harwood aiming to be an AFL umpire after being told to avoid sport

Image
It might be footy's least-appreciated skill, the boundary throw-in. Unlike the centre bounce, we rarely ponder its degree of difficulty or sense of occasion. There is no high-stakes prestige, like there is in rugby's lineout. Cheyne Mason has practised and coached this minor art form since 1998. "It has to be like a loop," said the Tasmanian Football Umpires Association (TFUA) stalwart. "It's got to go up really high, then come down on top of the rucks." The misconception is that it is all in the arm. Read More: https://www.abc.net.au/news/2022-08-20/mitchell-harwood-aiming-to-be-an-afl-umpire/101346252

Female detainee tells of Ashley prison abuse and 'favouritism' of some male inmates by staff

Abused, miserable and locked up, Charlotte* turned to self-harm — but when she was caught by a youth worker, the response was far from kind. "She slammed my head into a wooden bed base," she told Tasmania's commission of inquiry into child sexual abuse. "She told me to grow up and stop doing it. It was making more paperwork for them." Charlotte was sent to Tasmania's Ashley Youth Detention Centre at age 12 and was in and out of there until she was 15. West Australian and Tasmanian symphony orchestra choirs combining to sing Britten's War Requiem

Image
When the house lights go down in the Perth Concert Hall on Friday night, it will be a special moment for two choirs from opposite sides of the country. The West Australian Symphony Orchestra (WASO) Chorus and Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra (TSO) Chorus last performed together in late 2019, just months before COVID-19 travel restrictions came into effect. Now, they are back together to sing a monumental anthem for peace under the baton of WASO's principal conductor Asher Fisch. "This is the choral work of the 20th century, and probably one of the best choral works — choral, soloist, orchestra works — of all time," Fisch said.  Launceston marathon runner Michael Booth is showing no signs of slowing down as he chases an impressive feat. The 68-year-old has moved another step closer to reaching his goal of running 100 marathons. Booth recently ran his 93rd marathon, on the Sunshine Coast in Queensland. It's a long way from humble beginnings in 2002 when he was 48. "Everything I did was for my wife, my children and our family and I got to 48 years of age and I thought I think it's about time I did something for myself," he said.
